[Vash could put it back on in the pet store. He could even put it on in the inn, which would make it a lot more personal and intimate. But he's not really been able to do...much of anything openly with Ain pretty much ever, and this town is the closest he can and ever will get to that. Collaring your pets is not only normal, it's expected of their Owners. It won't be seen as unusual or strange; only the two of them will know there's a deeper undercurrent there, even if combined they don't have enough braincells to really get it.
Vash walks with Ain out into the snow, stopping only once they've reached an empty section of the sidewalk underneath a lamppost lit up for nighttime. They're in the town square presently, so there are a lot of people out right now, actually. Plenty of other humans and their pets...all of them plenty available to watch as Vash reaffixes the collar to Ain's neck, carefully clipping it into place.
Before he draws back, he brings two fingers to brush over the tag, causing it to make a soft jingling sound.]
