He's also far too busy marveling at Mayoi's behavior, how easily and delicately he curls up and rests, how fragile and lovely he seems doing something as graceless as yawning... It might be difficult to convince himself to let Mayoi get very far from him if he gets any more attached.

But he has to tell himself it's novelty and fascination more than real attachment. He couldn't abide being too selfish, unless it benefitted them both. He can only see where his attachment might make Mayoi's life difficult, or concealing and helping him difficult, so he's trying ever so hard to hold at least something in reserve.

[He busies himself with it, losing his balance only a little at one point. It's a much better showing than in the church, to be sure. But he seems to fuss over this and that, like he's delaying something... And when he finally slowly turns to Mayoi, he looks almost sheepish.]
