Hello, and welcome to The Care and Keeping of Your Pet! As you surely know, a pet is a big responsibility, and we're so glad you've decided to be a concientious master. A safe pet is a happy pet, and this handbook is certain to keep your precious lifelong friend as content as can be.
The history of the animal person is a long and difficult one, with their origins not being known even to this day. However, scientists believe that despite our common appearance - most animal people have humanoid forms except for the ears, tails, and sometimes teeth - we share no common ancestry, even if the ascent of this species corresponds with that of the homo sapien. We gained dominance over each breed thousands of years ago, beginning with the dog type, who have long been considered "man's best friend." Most breeds these days are docile and perfect for owners of any speed.
Of course, it is our duty as the superior species to take care of these animal creatures, and this is inherent in their genetic makeup. Everyone knows that an animal person, when matched with their correct human master, is loyal for life - a true "soulmate," if you will. Far be it for us to turn this away! Ever since the Great Domestication, these intelligent and loving animals have served us as friends, workmates, guardians, servants, and sexual companions and will for years to come. Despite recent hubbub from so-called "Pet People's Rights Activists," this way of life is wholesome and good. Scientific research shows that the natural desire of the pet person is to be owned and cared for by a human.
So, it's your first pet. What do you need to know?
As previously stated, pet people come in as many breeds as you can possibly think of. By far and away the most popular are the dog and cat types, but exotic birds and lizards have been gaining popularity among trendsetters from L.A. to Tokyo!
All pet types are best suited for certain jobs, and when hunting for one, it is best to search for a type that suits your needs best.
However, a "True Match" - when a pet person bonds with you and only you for the rest of their natural lives - comes naturally, and sometimes takes time before you can find the pet you will be able to give a forever home to.
According to all current research, pet people are completely sentient and like us in many ways. However, it is important to remember that they have many animalistic and feral characteristics. Do not be foolish and think that your pet is a person, despite the facts that many are clothed and may be allowed to read, write, and have "hobbies." Some traditional pet owners may eschew these frivolities, and that is within their right.
Pet people age more quickly than humans, at least physically, and many types have long lifespans. It is not uncommon for pets to be passed through the family. When getting your child their first pet, it's important to keep in mind that just because the pup is tiny now, a grown pet can be jumpy around a small child.
It is important to train a pet. Discipline will be necessary. This does not make you a bad owner. Failure to train early will result in a rebellious pet. Training is especially important if you want your pet to serve as a household servant.
Remember, your pet will be extremely protective of you, especially if you are Truly Bonded. It is best to socialize them early. A socialized pet is a perfect family pet.
These days, unowned and unbonded pet people are allowed to live as strays or "Frees" in certain designated areas. Some even hold "jobs." This is against their best interest, and owners who adopt these strays are to be rewarded. Still, the best place to get pets are from liscenced kennels or breeders.
Some masters find it beneficial to participate in activities with their pets, such as shows and other competitions.
Finally, much has been made about the sexual relationship between pet and master. This is a normal facet of the bond, and humans are sure to find pet people sexually alluring. But beyond that, it is only responsible and prudent for owners to care for their pet's needs. It is a well-known fact that the libidos of pet people are remarkably strong, and when they go into heat, it is usually more convenient for a master to relieve them. There is no risk of pregnancy. All rumors of hybrids are urban legends.
Despite this, masters must remember to not view their pets as romantic partners. Humans should stay with humans.
With that said, thank you and welcome to your first day as a pet's master! |

For all that Mayoi may be well-bred and meant to be beautiful, Tatsumi finds him lovely for reasons well beyond that. His kindness, his gentleness... his quiet, unassuming manner. There's nothing to dislike.
Once they both finish eating, he quickly washes the dishes and gestures back toward his bedroom.]
We can talk in my room until it's time to sleep. You can sleep in the bed, if you like. I don't think a night on the floor will hurt me.
no subject
Ah...
[Okay, no, this is actually something he can't concede to Tatsumi on.]
N-No. I would never get a wink of sleep if I somehow put you on the floor ...If there is not space for us both, I will take the floor.
[He is already feeling anxious and worked up again, so his eyes stay right towards the ground.]
I-I am sorry, I cannot- I cannot allow it.
no subject
[Tatsumi sees that mood shift and takes it as in stride as he possibly can.]
No, it's fine to share. I just didn't think you'd want to sleep next to a near-stranger on your first night.
[He's trying so hard to be conscientious, but it's clear that such a thing is going to be a gently uphill battle with Mayoi. Offering him a hand--and an apologetic smile--he guides Mayoi back toward the bedroom, hopeful that things won't be ruined in any appreciable way. He takes a seat on the edge of the bed, though he realizes he should've changed into his pajamas before they ate...]
Have a seat wherever you'd like. Make yourself at home. This is your home now, after all, isn't it...
no subject
[But in time, with patients and understanding, he'll come around.]
I...
[Ah, how should he put this. His tail flicks idly behind him as he follows Tatsumi back to his room.]
O-Of course, it's only if it suits Tatsumi-san, but ...I would like to stay close. I will sleep better... [He will feel safe tucked up against Tatsumi.]
[Once inside, Mayoi will come and sit on the edge of his bed. He will yawn, daintily covering his mouth, and then curl up at the foot of the bed, wrapping his tail around his feet. He is still awake and alert, watching Tatsumi from his spot.]
Does Tatsumi-san need help getting dressed for bed...?
[That was a task he was often given with some of the younger members of the house. He was something of a thankless nanny when he wasn't being a display piece.]
no subject
But he has to tell himself it's novelty and fascination more than real attachment. He couldn't abide being too selfish, unless it benefitted them both. He can only see where his attachment might make Mayoi's life difficult, or concealing and helping him difficult, so he's trying ever so hard to hold at least something in reserve.
It takes a moment for Mayoi's question to register.]
I think I can manage on my own, but thank you. You're looking rather tired, so I can't even dream of making you get up. If you'll give me just a moment to change, I'll sit with you.
[He busies himself with it, losing his balance only a little at one point. It's a much better showing than in the church, to be sure. But he seems to fuss over this and that, like he's delaying something... And when he finally slowly turns to Mayoi, he looks almost sheepish.]
May I ask for something else somewhat indulgent, though? If you dislike it, you're free to say no, of course. But... I'd like to run my fingers through your hair, or brush it if that's preferable. I used to have longer hair, you see. Maybe I miss it...?
[Or maybe he just wants to pet his new cat person. The excuse sounds so much better than the truth, he swears.]
no subject
[After a moment, he sits up properly, tipping his head to the side.]
Oh ...that is not something you need my permission for, Tatsumi-san.
[He offers him a little smile, though.]
But it's nice of you to ask. You may do what you like. I ...I am certain your touch will be much more gentle than what I am used to.
no subject
[He says, as if he would've not let Mayoi curl up with him if they hadn't had the brief discussion of it. Tatsumi's self-worth is at an all-time low, though it seems to soar above Mayoi's even so. If he can keep his dignity by treating someone else with dignity, he will. It's all that has sustained him through his difficulties.
So he sits down on the bed, terribly close to Mayoi, before reaching out to touch his hair. He's not sure what to say at first, so he strokes Mayoi's hair in silence. It's silken and soft, and he cherishes the fact that he's allowed to do this from the moment he starts.]
Do you like being touched at all? Ah, I should say, I've heard some pets like their ears scratched, or their chin, or they like being brushed or stroked on their fur a certain way. That may well be untrue, I realize.
no subject
That you feel that way is why I think I can trust you not to hurt me in the end.
[As it is, Mayoi tenses just a little as he anticipates Tatsumi's hands. When Tatsumi does in fact, treat him gently, a great deal of tension floods out of him, and he will curl back up the way he was before.]
It has been some time since ...I could enjoy something as simple as a gentle touch. I think once I was quite fond of it. Ah ...if you would not mind ...there is a spot just under my ear that is terribly nice...!
no subject
Then he gets brave, and he seeks a spot below one of Mayoi's ears with the same gentle touch.]
Here? Or lower?
[And he tries a tentative little scratch...]
no subject
[Mayoi tips his chin back a little, curling up a little more.]
Riiiiiight there~ fufufu, that's the spot~
[Should Tatsumi continue, he will be treated to the quietest most gentlest of happy little purrs.]
no subject
Mayoi-san, you're... happy.
no subject
[The purring stays quiet, but it's steady. Mayoi's eyes flutter shut.]
I am ...quite at ease. I don't remember the last time I felt such peace. Surely it is because I have never felt so safe with another person.
no subject
This is a very small thing, you know. All you need to do is ask for anything you need to feel safer and happier, and I'll see what can be done to reach it.
[The petting will continue until morale improves.]
I know you may be reluctant to do so, but it is your right in this house. In our home. I actually... hope we'll make each other very happy, because I've struggled to find peace myself.
no subject
[But here in Tatsumi's room, it feels like a sanctuary. He will bask in this for as long as he can.]
[However, this admission. Ah, he'd ...gotten the sense that something had been weighing on Tatsumi, though he felt like he had no place to ask. He thinks, perhaps, this might be an opening.]
Tatsumi-san is troubled by something deep in his heart. You do not have to speak of it ...but if there is something I can do to put you at ease, I would like to know.
no subject
I don't know what can be done for it, but your presence alone is already soothing me. Mostly what troubles me is... maybe my own fault, so the difficulty is forgiving everyone involved, including myself. The Lord says we should be forgiving, though, so I'll just have to keep trying.
[Maybe a good deed like this, selfish though it may be, will help him down that path.]
I doubt you would know, but I was a somewhat well-known idol not that long ago.
no subject
[His ears perk up a little at the mention of being an idol, though.]
I ...I know of Idols, though not much more than that. Their music would sometimes play at home. Songs that were bright and cheerful... I never would have guessed Tatsumi-san...
[Ah, is he about to be rude. He trails off just in case he shouldn't say that. Tatsumi-san is someone of the church. That image did not match up what he knew of idols, so he was surprised.]
no subject
[He gave up, really. He doesn't mind the isolation that much, but the lack of purpose grates on him to the point of sadness.
At least Mayoi soothes him, and helping him gives Tatsumi purpose. He'll do whatever it takes to convince his family, to save Mayoi from his own despair.]
Please don't mind being kept by someone like me. I'll treat you well, and anything you could possibly need, I'll find a way to provide.
