Hello, and welcome to The Care and Keeping of Your Pet! As you surely know, a pet is a big responsibility, and we're so glad you've decided to be a concientious master. A safe pet is a happy pet, and this handbook is certain to keep your precious lifelong friend as content as can be.

The history of the animal person is a long and difficult one, with their origins not being known even to this day. However, scientists believe that despite our common appearance - most animal people have humanoid forms except for the ears, tails, and sometimes teeth - we share no common ancestry, even if the ascent of this species corresponds with that of the homo sapien. We gained dominance over each breed thousands of years ago, beginning with the dog type, who have long been considered "man's best friend." Most breeds these days are docile and perfect for owners of any speed.

Of course, it is our duty as the superior species to take care of these animal creatures, and this is inherent in their genetic makeup. Everyone knows that an animal person, when matched with their correct human master, is loyal for life - a true "soulmate," if you will. Far be it for us to turn this away! Ever since the Great Domestication, these intelligent and loving animals have served us as friends, workmates, guardians, servants, and sexual companions and will for years to come. Despite recent hubbub from so-called "Pet People's Rights Activists," this way of life is wholesome and good. Scientific research shows that the natural desire of the pet person is to be owned and cared for by a human.

So, it's your first pet. What do you need to know?

As previously stated, pet people come in as many breeds as you can possibly think of. By far and away the most popular are the dog and cat types, but exotic birds and lizards have been gaining popularity among trendsetters from L.A. to Tokyo!
All pet types are best suited for certain jobs, and when hunting for one, it is best to search for a type that suits your needs best.
However, a "True Match" - when a pet person bonds with you and only you for the rest of their natural lives - comes naturally, and sometimes takes time before you can find the pet you will be able to give a forever home to.
According to all current research, pet people are completely sentient and like us in many ways. However, it is important to remember that they have many animalistic and feral characteristics. Do not be foolish and think that your pet is a person, despite the facts that many are clothed and may be allowed to read, write, and have "hobbies." Some traditional pet owners may eschew these frivolities, and that is within their right.
Pet people age more quickly than humans, at least physically, and many types have long lifespans. It is not uncommon for pets to be passed through the family. When getting your child their first pet, it's important to keep in mind that just because the pup is tiny now, a grown pet can be jumpy around a small child.
It is important to train a pet. Discipline will be necessary. This does not make you a bad owner. Failure to train early will result in a rebellious pet. Training is especially important if you want your pet to serve as a household servant.
Remember, your pet will be extremely protective of you, especially if you are Truly Bonded. It is best to socialize them early. A socialized pet is a perfect family pet.
These days, unowned and unbonded pet people are allowed to live as strays or "Frees" in certain designated areas. Some even hold "jobs." This is against their best interest, and owners who adopt these strays are to be rewarded. Still, the best place to get pets are from liscenced kennels or breeders.
Some masters find it beneficial to participate in activities with their pets, such as shows and other competitions.
Finally, much has been made about the sexual relationship between pet and master. This is a normal facet of the bond, and humans are sure to find pet people sexually alluring. But beyond that, it is only responsible and prudent for owners to care for their pet's needs. It is a well-known fact that the libidos of pet people are remarkably strong, and when they go into heat, it is usually more convenient for a master to relieve them. There is no risk of pregnancy. All rumors of hybrids are urban legends.
Despite this, masters must remember to not view their pets as romantic partners. Humans should stay with humans.

Needless to say, The Care and Keeping of Your Pet is a bit biased and full of propaganda, but it gives a good idea of the world your character is now AU's into. They are either a pet person or a human master, and what that means for them varies.

So are they a devoted pet or a rebellious animal person looking to buck the system? A generous master or a cruel sexual sadist? Just a normal pet owner? Most likely they're something in between, but when you're raised in this world, it's difficult to see anything different on the horizon.

Rules

Comment with your character and say whether they'd be a master or a pet. Ideally, they could be played as both. Mention what kind of each they'd be and what they'd be like, (ie: "Xx-chan is a bunny girl who is happy to please her master" or "Asterothia is a cat boy who is aloof but loyal to his true master"). For pets, be sure to include features ("wolf ears, tail, teeth).

REMEMBER, pet does not automatically equal submissive and master automatically equal dominant. This is not a BDSM setting though BDSM can be included. How far you want to go with the actual "pet" aspect is up to you, as well. Your pet could just be your slightly-furry roommate or soulmate!

This by no means an all-inclusive list, but it should get you going in the right direction.

First Time Pet/Owner: Usually, pets are gotten at a young age; you're an old dog. Can you learn new tricks?
True Bond: What all masters and pets yearn for...the pet's loyalty and adoration for life.
Love: It's expected for masters to love their pets, but to love them? Romance is strictly forbidden.
Old "Couple": Master and pet have grown together and know each other. You know, know each other.
Loss of Master: The pet has lost their master, perhaps even their True Bond. Is it possible to move on?
Young Master/Older Pet: Pets age quicker than masters, so it's possible to end up with a bit of an "age" difference.
Family Pet: This pet's been raised as part of the family. What happens when their feelings for a family member get more than platonic.
For Your Protection: You don't want to be a master, but you have to take in a pet for their protection lest they be in danger from the general public.
Stray: You're a stray or a "Free." Can you live like this with your biology screaming for you to make a match?
Servant: You're more servant than pet.
All Sex, All the Time: The only purpose for this pet is to service the master, and not in a way that means cleaning their house.
Guard: You're a loyal bodyguard, a service pet. You'll do anything for your master. Anything.
Pet Play: This is for those who prefer to keep their animals on leashes, have them eat from bowls, and keep away from clothing.
Breaking In: Training is important with any pet.
In Love with Another Master...or Pet: To lust after another's master is no better than treason, and to wish to be with another pet just cruel!
Punishment: Bad dog, no nookie!
Heat: All pets go into heat, and it's the responsibility of the owner to take care of this problem. After all, unchecked dry humping kills thousands every year.
Breeding: Breeders know the best qualities in each type and mate the cream of the crop together to continue lines. It's a hobby for some, a calling for others.
Territorial: Hey, hey, other dog person! This is your apartment. Stay the fuck out!
Kennel: Kennels are where unadopted pets are kept. They're generally agreed to be depressing places. Why not volunteer at one, keeping the pets healthy and happy with the kind of affection only humans can show?
Rebelling Against the System: Damn the Man! Pet people are people, too! Just be careful not to get talk. You know what happens to bad pets.
Instant Attraction: You ever just look at someone and know they're the one? That they're...your master? But what if you've been trying to fight it? Well, don't try!
Dominant Pet: You might be the pet, but you call the shots, at least in the bedroom.
Pet Show: Everyone wants to show off how perfect their animal is. Look at that ass! And you'll never believe their special skills...
Therapeutic: Pets, especially those bred for their kindliness, are perfect therapy for those who've been through trauma and heartache.
Jealousy: Who's that around your master? Oh, hell no. They better not be touching them!
Petting: Pet people are absolutely gaga for being touched. Even the most steely ones turn to mush for rubs.
Games: Playing with your pet and giving them exercise is a key to happiness. Of course, with a pet person, you might want to use other toys instead of a ball.

Either way, they tour around for a while. Chung points out a few more places, and comments about some of the people Vash will likely meet later — a lot of them have ~illegal~ magic, like Aisha; some of them aren't too good at talking so don't be surprised if they don't say much; Lu can be a little loud so don't mind her, Ciel was in the mafia, blah blah blah... He's going to have Fun Facts about everyone by the time they loop back to the warehouse and conclude their tour. At which point...]

We're a little early... it didn't take us the full two hours. Do you want to check on Ain? Spend time with him?

[Just try to uninvite him to see what Ain might do, I dare you.

The little tour is enjoyable. So much so, in fact, that Vash is able to just kind of...relax and forget things for a while. Ain is safe and having him a big snooze, they're underground in a place where he's fairly certain even Nai couldn't sniff out, not even if he manages to track them all the way to this city proper. Even in the village Vash didn't feel truly safe, but here?

It feels like maybe he can be, just for a short time.

Plus, he's thrilled to get to know Ain's friends, trying to commit the little factoids he learns about each of them to memory. He may not be able to remember all of their names exactly, but he will recognize them. He'll learn!]

Oh, has it not been? [Funny how time works, especially when you're not stressed out of your mind.] I'd like to, but...I wasn't sure if disturbing him would disrupt his healing at all. He was sick before back at the village, and it took everything I had just to keep him in bed.

[Ah yes. Classic Ain.]

Haha... uh, [this is not Chung's area of expertise help.] Well, I'm sure it'll be fine. We're going to have to wake him to eat soon, and it's probably good to make sure he's not up and trying to escape.

[Ophelia is watching him, but. Like. You know. Ain is... some kinda way.]

[Vash fully believes Ain would figure out some way to escape through the window if he really wanted to, being watched be damned. Vash just has to hope that his bird did get some sleep while they were gone...he could definitely use more than two hours of rest, so they'll just have to see.]

Alright. Let's go back and make sure he's gotten at least some rest.

[Great, and with that decided... back to the warehouse they go, and like. Listen. Chung is an extrovert, so he'll talk up until they get back to the staircase that leads up to the apartments. Actually, he'll go up there with Vash to finish what he's talking about, and then veer off to his own room. He will see you......................... like very shortly when they get food made. So like an hour.]

[Ain's door is unlocked, obviously, because he hasn't locked it and no one else has either. It's pretty safe up here; it would be hard to rob a man who has nothing.

Of course... Something has gotten into the room while everyone was gone. Or. Two somethings, rather, the larger of which is curled up on Ain's chest while he sleeps, and the other one which is just. sitting on his head.

Don't worry about this.]

[Don't worry Chung, Vash is Also an extrovert and will happily chat away with you the entire way up, waving him off as he scurries back to his room to wait for dinner. It all leaves Vash feeling very...warm, and fuzzy. Chung is a good kid, and he's done a lot of legwork already to make Vash feel welcomed.

But now, it's time to check up on his bird, and when Vash carefully pokes his head into the room he half expects Ain to be awake...so suffice it to say he's not only surprised that he isn't, but is doubly surprised to walk in on not one, but two creatures of some sort just.

Laying.........on him.]

...huh?

[Vash steps the rest of the way in, carefully closing the door behind him before tentatively approaching, not wanting to wake Ain or disturb the little guys on him. What....are you...]

The larger creature gets up, just. inconsiderately stepping all over Ain while it goes, hops down from the bed, and trots up to Vash. Its tailfeathers wag. It's the size of a greyhound. It is not, by any means, a Small creature.

It holds a single paw out to Vash. Shake paw. Do it.]

[This is...perplexing. Vash has never seen a creature like this before. But given the way it gets up, stomps all over Ain, and pads over to him...it seems friendly. Wag....

...oh.]

Oh?

[Vash looks down at the little offered paw.

What else, but to hold out his only hand and take it, gently, to shake?]

[ THE COVENANT HAS BEEN MADE

The strange, colourful owldog barks, and then goofily, lets its tongue flop out from the side of its beak. Hello. You are friend. :3c

...anyway, the bark wakes Ain up, and he jolts and sits up way too hard and it knocks the smaller, rounder creature off of his head and into his lap. Luckily, the creature is made of marshmallow goo, and is unharmed, if a bit miffed.]

Whuh— [...] Vash? ...Dachie?

[The sudden bark is enough to make Vash jolt a little, and then immediately put a finger to his lips to try and gently shush the creature, but...alas, it's too late. Ain will wake up and look over to see his boyfriend sitting back on his heels looking sheepish, bringing his hand up to wave a little at him.]

Ahaha...good morning?

[He has made a blood pact with your dog, um]

Mm... what day is it?

the same day, babe, it's been about an hour and forty-five minutes,]

...did Dachie find you? I fell asleep pretty soon after you left...

Don't worry, it's only been an hour or so.

[Not nearly long enough for a proper rest, but it's better than he's been getting, so Vash will take it. He will also lower his hand and gently offer it to the little owldog again, just in case the creature wants to....sniff? his hand to get acquainted first.]

Actually, I came back to check on you, and this... [????] Little guy was already in here. Um...Dachie?

[Just. Stares down at the blob in his lap. What...]

...Dachsologie, [he says, in perfectly butchered German,] he's my... um. He's a magical creature, sort of like an owl and a dog combined? He must have broken in. And brought...

[Staring continues. Picks up the smaller one.]

A baby version of himself... [Sigh.] He usually likes to steal the little ones and sit on them. He thinks he's a great caretaker and all.

[Well, Vash sure doesn't seem to mind. He's seeing if the bigger Dachie will allow pets. Can he pet you? He's going to pet you.]

They're really cute...you never told me you had your own pet.

Haha, well... that's because I left him behind when I left, since he's normally troublesome.

[The dog loves painting, barking, biting people, biting people affectionately, getting himself stuck in small spaces, being in the walls... he also loves being pat, though, and starts wagging Fast when Vash touches him.]

Mm... but you're kind of my other pet, right? You're a lot more obedient than he is!

Vash is just glad that it's just the two of them in the room right now, so no one can see the way he blushes furiously at that comment, all while giving Dachie some scritches behind the head.]

Is that what I am, now?

[He teases, gently brushing his fingers through Dachie's feathers. Pat pat.]

[Dachie is pleased. Dachie has experienced being pat by someone who smells a lot like Ain. Why do you smell like Ain, sir? :0]

Mm... haha, we'll see! When I feel better, I have a lot to show you, I think.

[Okay, yeah, maybe he's a little too exhausted to be too horny. On that note, he's scooping the baby Dachie and lying back down, after he sets the little one on the floor to pit-a-pat over to Vash anyway.]

I'm a little out of breath right now, though. I think this is the sinus problems I was warned about... or the start of it, anyway.

[God they are so small...and so cute...Vash unfortunately only has one hand though, so after a moment he has to take his attention away from Dachie so he can look at the smaller Dachie. Do you want a pet too? Pat pat.]

Ah...do you need me to bring you anything? Some tissues maybe...or something to drink?

[Or hell, medicine if it's needed. Though Vash is pretty sure the others have already gotten that part covered in his absence, probably.]

Ms. Queen's servant can do it. I... want you to stay here with me.

[They were apart for ONE hour. ONE. Yet Ain is the clingiest person on the planet, worse when he's under the weather, so... he'll send Ophelia off to get him some water, and then make grabby hands at Vash. Please come love himmmm he's in need of attentionnnnnn...

Meanwhile, the tiny Dachie beeps, and big Dachie immediately gets jealous and picks the baby up, moves it slightly to the left, and then sits on it.]

[Well! That solves that problem, goodbye baby he'll miss you...

Vash chuckles in spite of himself at the display, giving Dachie one more gentle pet on the head before he stands up, reflexively reaching a hand over to where his sleeve is still tied back to make sure it's stayed in place. Ain has probably noticed by now his lack-of-arm, but it's in good hands at the moment. He imagines Eve is hard at work as they speak.

In the meantime though, Vash steps over to the bed, and...yeah, he's going to move to lay down next to Ain, sickness be damned. He does not care, let him hold you.]

How are you feeling? ...I'm guessing pretty bad.

[Vash is gone, so Dachie unsits on his mini-me and instead just flops down on the floor to groom the baby. See, he's a caretaker, but he also has jealousy issues. ...you know, just like Ain.

With Vash now in Ain's sort of too-small bed, the bird scoots over and then immediately puts his face in Vash's titties. He's still burning hot, but a lot of the fever has subsided due to the medicine he took before he crashed.]

The medicine is getting rid of most of the bad symptoms, but I'm still pretty lethargic. I don't feel great.

[Cmere Ain, his titties are healing. Vash is just gonna wrap his good arm around him, kissing his forehead before resting his cheek against his temple with a concerned huff.]

Oh, Ain. I’m sorry you got so sick. You had just gotten better, too. Or, I guess you didn’t finish getting better to begin with…

[SIGH]

We’re lucky we made it here at all.

It was worth it. We're here now... and we're safe. I'll recover eventually, and we would have been out longer if I didn't push myself.

[You also could just. Rest. Like a normal person. But... yeah, staying in one place too long can spell disaster for them. Ain knows that, Vash knows that, and it was them and uninhabited land for miles. That hot spring helped to delay the inevitable, but that was... all it did.

Ain could probably use another hot bath, but... later. He's too weary to get up now. Laying down, he's well aware of how gelatinous his wings and arms feel.]

I told you I'd protect you. This is was the best way to do it.
