Hello, and welcome to The Care and Keeping of Your Pet! As you surely know, a pet is a big responsibility, and we're so glad you've decided to be a concientious master. A safe pet is a happy pet, and this handbook is certain to keep your precious lifelong friend as content as can be.
The history of the animal person is a long and difficult one, with their origins not being known even to this day. However, scientists believe that despite our common appearance - most animal people have humanoid forms except for the ears, tails, and sometimes teeth - we share no common ancestry, even if the ascent of this species corresponds with that of the homo sapien. We gained dominance over each breed thousands of years ago, beginning with the dog type, who have long been considered "man's best friend." Most breeds these days are docile and perfect for owners of any speed.
Of course, it is our duty as the superior species to take care of these animal creatures, and this is inherent in their genetic makeup. Everyone knows that an animal person, when matched with their correct human master, is loyal for life - a true "soulmate," if you will. Far be it for us to turn this away! Ever since the Great Domestication, these intelligent and loving animals have served us as friends, workmates, guardians, servants, and sexual companions and will for years to come. Despite recent hubbub from so-called "Pet People's Rights Activists," this way of life is wholesome and good. Scientific research shows that the natural desire of the pet person is to be owned and cared for by a human.
So, it's your first pet. What do you need to know?
As previously stated, pet people come in as many breeds as you can possibly think of. By far and away the most popular are the dog and cat types, but exotic birds and lizards have been gaining popularity among trendsetters from L.A. to Tokyo!
All pet types are best suited for certain jobs, and when hunting for one, it is best to search for a type that suits your needs best.
However, a "True Match" - when a pet person bonds with you and only you for the rest of their natural lives - comes naturally, and sometimes takes time before you can find the pet you will be able to give a forever home to.
According to all current research, pet people are completely sentient and like us in many ways. However, it is important to remember that they have many animalistic and feral characteristics. Do not be foolish and think that your pet is a person, despite the facts that many are clothed and may be allowed to read, write, and have "hobbies." Some traditional pet owners may eschew these frivolities, and that is within their right.
Pet people age more quickly than humans, at least physically, and many types have long lifespans. It is not uncommon for pets to be passed through the family. When getting your child their first pet, it's important to keep in mind that just because the pup is tiny now, a grown pet can be jumpy around a small child.
It is important to train a pet. Discipline will be necessary. This does not make you a bad owner. Failure to train early will result in a rebellious pet. Training is especially important if you want your pet to serve as a household servant.
Remember, your pet will be extremely protective of you, especially if you are Truly Bonded. It is best to socialize them early. A socialized pet is a perfect family pet.
These days, unowned and unbonded pet people are allowed to live as strays or "Frees" in certain designated areas. Some even hold "jobs." This is against their best interest, and owners who adopt these strays are to be rewarded. Still, the best place to get pets are from liscenced kennels or breeders.
Some masters find it beneficial to participate in activities with their pets, such as shows and other competitions.
Finally, much has been made about the sexual relationship between pet and master. This is a normal facet of the bond, and humans are sure to find pet people sexually alluring. But beyond that, it is only responsible and prudent for owners to care for their pet's needs. It is a well-known fact that the libidos of pet people are remarkably strong, and when they go into heat, it is usually more convenient for a master to relieve them. There is no risk of pregnancy. All rumors of hybrids are urban legends.
Despite this, masters must remember to not view their pets as romantic partners. Humans should stay with humans.
With that said, thank you and welcome to your first day as a pet's master! |

But Vash isn't thinking about mortgages right now. He's just looking up at Ain all doe-eyed now that they've broken from that kiss, panting a little in the wake of it. He is in dangerous swapping-illness territory at this point, but honestly if he was going to get sick...he likely would have. Also, can you catch a cold from someone who got sick due to the elements...can you really...
Anyway. Don't mind him as he strokes your cheek, Ain, he loves u.]
I can't stop, otherwise I'd have to change my whole face, wouldn't I?
[He smirks, cheeky, as he leans in to rest their foreheads together.]
Am I getting better at it? Kissing?
no subject
[So the humans say.]
Don't worry about it too much. I'll turn you into a master when it comes to using your mouth to satisfy. [Ain.] You're about... mm... one third of the way there already! I'm impressed!
you ever just forget to hit send
A third? Wow...
[Well hey, if Ain is impressed, that's all that matters. If he had feathers of his own, he'd be preening right now.]
We'll have to....practice more, when you're feeling better.
["Practice"]
no subject
I thought I made a monster out of you. [Vash like "it's kind of addicting :0" clued Ain in initially, but.] I promise we will. If I wasn't feeling tired again, we'd do it now.
[He needs to rest, though. The fever will probably go away quicker if he does. Please expect nothing else of him today except he might wake up in four hours to eat a cookie and go back to bed.]

Ain doesn't recover hours later, or even a few days later. Colds, as it turns out, have a funny way of sticking around, especially if you pushed yourself into having one. Luckily, Ain isn't on death's doorstep, and he isn't in danger of contracting pneumonia any time soon. The more he rests, the better he gets, day by day. It does mean though that Vash is spending most of his time at the inn looking after his pet, which he doesn't mind at all. Tucking him into bed, bringing him cool cloths for his forehead, feeding him, helping him bathe...and of course cuddling him to sleep at night just in case his fever breaks and he starts getting cold again.
This also means that the end of the week creeps up on them all too fast. They haven't spent all of their money- they probably have enough to stay for another half a week, but that isn't counting the extra hotel charges they'd have to cover- which means this is the perfect time to start packing up and heading out. They'll relocate to the next town and start the process all over again, only it may not be so easy to lay low next time. Vash...isn't yet sure what Ain's hometown is going to be like. Is his face plastered all over wanted posters there, too?
The weather seems to recognize this as being their last day too, because it's snowing steadily as they finish off breakfast that morning. Ain seems to have made a mostly full recovery, save for generally being a little weaker due to having been in bed for a couple days. Vash peers out the window as he finishes off a bagel, tilting his head.]
Mmh-...man. I think it's gonna snow another foot before we leave...
no subject
They're on their last day, so they'll have to leave either by tonight or by very early tomorrow morning. And because Ain's been sick, they haven't gotten the chance to play in the snow like he wanted to, and he's being overdramatic mentally right now but he's Not Leaving Until They Get To. Big cities never allow for snowy fun because they plow the streets so quickly. Little mountain towns? This is their life. So.
As they polish off breakfast, Ain's wings flutter in that way that says "I have an idea". The idea is going to be bad.]
I still want to throw snowballs at you, and build a snowman. We won't be out long! I promise!
[It's like a child asking for a popsicle at a faire.]
no subject
Vash balls up the napkin he was using as his attention is pulled from the window by Ain, his expression softening as he smiles.]
And I promised we would before we left, didn't I?
[Well, it was more of a joint effort more or less, but STILL]
Just as long as you promise you'll go back inside if you start feeling bad again.
no subject
[Vash's arm worsens by the day, and Ain doesn't want to take more risks than are necessary. He has... no way to know if Eve will actually be where she usually is, but the Friend Braincell says yes, she will be there, and if she's not he guesses they just die. All in all, he's not too worried about it, on account of the fact that he's not allowing his anxiety to let him be worried about it.
So! Compartmentalizing aside!
Ain is already moving to the door and slipping his shoes on, buttoning his coat up (praise him for wearing his coat properly please), and bouncing on his heels.]
You're done eating, right?
[boy what if he's Not be Patient]
guess who fell the fuck to sleep mid-tag it was me
Vash nods, having long since thrown the rest of that bagel into his mouth before hopping his way into his boots, stomping them in succession against the floor to get them fully on. Vash is proud of you for covering up your titties, Ain, you're going to need it.]
Yep, I'm ready!
I support you
The weather is currently not nice, though, so that means this is their playground for a couple hours.
To start, Ain immediately begins rolling the base for a snowman. A small snowball that progressively gets bigger as he walks around with it. He's going classic here, because he's not sure how to sculpt anything else.]
Can you roll the... Uh. Torso, I guess?
[What do they call the segments? Should he refer to it in bug terms. Is Vash making a thorax.]
no subject
Vash nods with a chuckle as he sets to work on the biggest snowbank he can find, scooping a bunch of snow into a little pile before beginning to roll it into a proper ball.]
Got it!
[It's definitely the thorax.]
Do we want him to have three segments, or just two?
no subject
Um... three, I think!
[That's how most of them are done in books. Three balls of snow all rolled up on top of each other. Sometimes people put hats on them, but they don't have a hat. Rocks for eyes will have to work and that'll be good enough. There are plenty of rocks, Ain notes, so snowball fights later might turn into full-blown murder if they're not careful.
Ain rolls the base until it's about to his hips, maybe a bit shorter. The head will be smaller, so he starts to work on that after he parks the bottom segment where he thinks it should be.]
no subject
Just the top half, now! Let's see, what else can we use...
[Rocks for eyes, and...buttons? They have those. There should be some sticks nearby too for the arms...]
Is it still a snow man if we give him wings? [???] Then he'd match you!
no subject
...how can we make wings? [He's not saying no he's just not sure how any of this works.] With sticks? Or big leaves?
[Except they're in the mountains and it's all pine forests up here.]
no subject
[They can sort of mimic the structure of wings without actually being properly shaped like them, he's figuring.
Vash brushes snow off his hands onto his pants before setting off into the edge of the forest just beyond the little clearing of snow they're working with, digging through the drifts to pull out bigger sticks that have been snowed over.]
The arms can be little ones!
no subject
[That's all he says, just "oh okay" and then he starts digging, too, at the edge of the woods for twiggy sticks. Luckily, those are in abundance. It would be harder to find a stick without a million twigs, it seems, though now Ain is paralyzed with Choice.
Do they use this one? Do they break a few twigs off of that one to make it more wingy? Hmmmm...]
Here. If we break a twig off of this one, we can make these almost symmetrical.
[Ain is showing Vash a collection of sticks like, help, how do aesthetics work.]
no subject
And then the twin branches get stabbed into the snowman's "shoulders", long before they've even given the poor guy actual arms.]
There! Those look great!
[Vash commments as he starts scooping rocks up off the ground, dusting the snow off them as he holds them up to the snowman, trying to see which ones are shaped the nicest for their purposes.]
no subject
[Ah yes, snowman heterochromia, a very important design choice.]
Do we want to build the smile out of little twigs, or rocks?
no subject
Hmm...let's do more rocks, maybe? But smaller ones this time.
[Something something cohesion. He will go for Ain's suggestion in alternating the stones they use for the eyes. He makes sure they're pressed in deeply enough that they won't fall out before leaning back again on his heels, pressing his fingers to his lips in thought.]
Mmh. Something feels like it's missing though...
no subject
[They gave it wings and eyes and what is currently half a mouth, as Ain digs in the snow for more tiny rocks to make the rest of said mouth. He's thinking as he rummages that he kind of likes the lopsided smile look, so maybe he'll grab only a couple more...]
People make noses out of carrots, right? We don't have carrots... maybe a pointy stone? Or a pinecone! There are a lot of pinecones.
no subject
[Would be nice if they had a carrot, but...they're poor, so. Freely available pinecone it shall be. So while Ain is getting the smile in order, Vash is back to searching in the snow for some pinecones. There are quite a number of them out here, ranging from small to too massive even for a snowman. Hmm...
Vash ends up returning with. An armful of pinecones. And he just deposits them in a heap at Ain's feet like a dog.]
I couldn't pick just one of them...
[Please help.]
no subject
Oh, wow. [is all he manages, as he crouches down to start digging through the pile. Hmm...] You brought me the whole forest! I think this one will work. These become trees eventually, right?
[That's how pinecones work, r...right...]
When the snow melts, do you think they'll sprout?
[Said as he's cramming a pinecone into the snowman's face, heyo, he has a nose now. And with two little sticks for the arms, he's done. Now all they need to do is bring him to life with a magical tophat—]
no subject
Vash crouches back down in front of the snowman as Ain puts the pinecone in for the nose, smiling now that he seems a bit more complete. he's a little...naked. But unless they want to leave behind the few clothing articles they have, he'll just have to deal with going commando.]
Some of them might. It's the seeds that would be sprouting.
[Vash explains, reaching out to brush a finger along the spikes of the pinecone.]
They need to get buried into the ground...either by chance, or by animals. Then they'll have a chance to grow.
no subject
Ain hums. He's learning something today, about how pine trees are born. Ain's thinking the whole pinecone is the seed, but apparently that's not true? What the hell. Plants are weird. He likes them, but man they're weird.]
I see. [And then, with Mr. Snowman complete... naked, but complete... he begins gathering snow into his palm and dunks it on top of Vash's head.] You sure know a lot!
[Take that as a declaration of war, though, since Ain is already running off to start making another snowball. Who cares about trees, he has to Get Vash.]
no subject
You-! Get back here!
[Already, Vash is reaching down to scoop up some snow into his prosthetic hand, because hey guess what when you have a cybernetic arm it means you can just pick up cold and hot things without consequence. He is making the largest snowball he possibly can, say goodbye to your head Ain-]
