Hello, and welcome to The Care and Keeping of Your Pet! As you surely know, a pet is a big responsibility, and we're so glad you've decided to be a concientious master. A safe pet is a happy pet, and this handbook is certain to keep your precious lifelong friend as content as can be.

The history of the animal person is a long and difficult one, with their origins not being known even to this day. However, scientists believe that despite our common appearance - most animal people have humanoid forms except for the ears, tails, and sometimes teeth - we share no common ancestry, even if the ascent of this species corresponds with that of the homo sapien. We gained dominance over each breed thousands of years ago, beginning with the dog type, who have long been considered "man's best friend." Most breeds these days are docile and perfect for owners of any speed.

Of course, it is our duty as the superior species to take care of these animal creatures, and this is inherent in their genetic makeup. Everyone knows that an animal person, when matched with their correct human master, is loyal for life - a true "soulmate," if you will. Far be it for us to turn this away! Ever since the Great Domestication, these intelligent and loving animals have served us as friends, workmates, guardians, servants, and sexual companions and will for years to come. Despite recent hubbub from so-called "Pet People's Rights Activists," this way of life is wholesome and good. Scientific research shows that the natural desire of the pet person is to be owned and cared for by a human.

So, it's your first pet. What do you need to know?

As previously stated, pet people come in as many breeds as you can possibly think of. By far and away the most popular are the dog and cat types, but exotic birds and lizards have been gaining popularity among trendsetters from L.A. to Tokyo!
All pet types are best suited for certain jobs, and when hunting for one, it is best to search for a type that suits your needs best.
However, a "True Match" - when a pet person bonds with you and only you for the rest of their natural lives - comes naturally, and sometimes takes time before you can find the pet you will be able to give a forever home to.
According to all current research, pet people are completely sentient and like us in many ways. However, it is important to remember that they have many animalistic and feral characteristics. Do not be foolish and think that your pet is a person, despite the facts that many are clothed and may be allowed to read, write, and have "hobbies." Some traditional pet owners may eschew these frivolities, and that is within their right.
Pet people age more quickly than humans, at least physically, and many types have long lifespans. It is not uncommon for pets to be passed through the family. When getting your child their first pet, it's important to keep in mind that just because the pup is tiny now, a grown pet can be jumpy around a small child.
It is important to train a pet. Discipline will be necessary. This does not make you a bad owner. Failure to train early will result in a rebellious pet. Training is especially important if you want your pet to serve as a household servant.
Remember, your pet will be extremely protective of you, especially if you are Truly Bonded. It is best to socialize them early. A socialized pet is a perfect family pet.
These days, unowned and unbonded pet people are allowed to live as strays or "Frees" in certain designated areas. Some even hold "jobs." This is against their best interest, and owners who adopt these strays are to be rewarded. Still, the best place to get pets are from liscenced kennels or breeders.
Some masters find it beneficial to participate in activities with their pets, such as shows and other competitions.
Finally, much has been made about the sexual relationship between pet and master. This is a normal facet of the bond, and humans are sure to find pet people sexually alluring. But beyond that, it is only responsible and prudent for owners to care for their pet's needs. It is a well-known fact that the libidos of pet people are remarkably strong, and when they go into heat, it is usually more convenient for a master to relieve them. There is no risk of pregnancy. All rumors of hybrids are urban legends.
Despite this, masters must remember to not view their pets as romantic partners. Humans should stay with humans.

Needless to say, The Care and Keeping of Your Pet is a bit biased and full of propaganda, but it gives a good idea of the world your character is now AU's into. They are either a pet person or a human master, and what that means for them varies.

So are they a devoted pet or a rebellious animal person looking to buck the system? A generous master or a cruel sexual sadist? Just a normal pet owner? Most likely they're something in between, but when you're raised in this world, it's difficult to see anything different on the horizon.

Rules

Comment with your character and say whether they'd be a master or a pet. Ideally, they could be played as both. Mention what kind of each they'd be and what they'd be like, (ie: "Xx-chan is a bunny girl who is happy to please her master" or "Asterothia is a cat boy who is aloof but loyal to his true master"). For pets, be sure to include features ("wolf ears, tail, teeth).

REMEMBER, pet does not automatically equal submissive and master automatically equal dominant. This is not a BDSM setting though BDSM can be included. How far you want to go with the actual "pet" aspect is up to you, as well. Your pet could just be your slightly-furry roommate or soulmate!

This by no means an all-inclusive list, but it should get you going in the right direction.

First Time Pet/Owner: Usually, pets are gotten at a young age; you're an old dog. Can you learn new tricks?
True Bond: What all masters and pets yearn for...the pet's loyalty and adoration for life.
Love: It's expected for masters to love their pets, but to love them? Romance is strictly forbidden.
Old "Couple": Master and pet have grown together and know each other. You know, know each other.
Loss of Master: The pet has lost their master, perhaps even their True Bond. Is it possible to move on?
Young Master/Older Pet: Pets age quicker than masters, so it's possible to end up with a bit of an "age" difference.
Family Pet: This pet's been raised as part of the family. What happens when their feelings for a family member get more than platonic.
For Your Protection: You don't want to be a master, but you have to take in a pet for their protection lest they be in danger from the general public.
Stray: You're a stray or a "Free." Can you live like this with your biology screaming for you to make a match?
Servant: You're more servant than pet.
All Sex, All the Time: The only purpose for this pet is to service the master, and not in a way that means cleaning their house.
Guard: You're a loyal bodyguard, a service pet. You'll do anything for your master. Anything.
Pet Play: This is for those who prefer to keep their animals on leashes, have them eat from bowls, and keep away from clothing.
Breaking In: Training is important with any pet.
In Love with Another Master...or Pet: To lust after another's master is no better than treason, and to wish to be with another pet just cruel!
Punishment: Bad dog, no nookie!
Heat: All pets go into heat, and it's the responsibility of the owner to take care of this problem. After all, unchecked dry humping kills thousands every year.
Breeding: Breeders know the best qualities in each type and mate the cream of the crop together to continue lines. It's a hobby for some, a calling for others.
Territorial: Hey, hey, other dog person! This is your apartment. Stay the fuck out!
Kennel: Kennels are where unadopted pets are kept. They're generally agreed to be depressing places. Why not volunteer at one, keeping the pets healthy and happy with the kind of affection only humans can show?
Rebelling Against the System: Damn the Man! Pet people are people, too! Just be careful not to get talk. You know what happens to bad pets.
Instant Attraction: You ever just look at someone and know they're the one? That they're...your master? But what if you've been trying to fight it? Well, don't try!
Dominant Pet: You might be the pet, but you call the shots, at least in the bedroom.
Pet Show: Everyone wants to show off how perfect their animal is. Look at that ass! And you'll never believe their special skills...
Therapeutic: Pets, especially those bred for their kindliness, are perfect therapy for those who've been through trauma and heartache.
Jealousy: Who's that around your master? Oh, hell no. They better not be touching them!
Petting: Pet people are absolutely gaga for being touched. Even the most steely ones turn to mush for rubs.
Games: Playing with your pet and giving them exercise is a key to happiness. Of course, with a pet person, you might want to use other toys instead of a ball.

[Ain pulls back just long enough to get a good look at Vash and good god he's red. He's so red that were Ain not the cause of this, he'd think the guy has a fever or a really bad sunburn. But it's really nothing so innocent.

His wings flex happily a few times, like he might take off if they weren't indoors, and the trilling starts up for a half-minutes in the back of his throat. That's the thing about birds, is they're noisy constantly, even when their noises are a bit less-than-sexy. Songbirds are the worst. Ain is completely unaware he's even doing this as he excitedly starts sticking his hands up under Vash's shirt so he can pry it off.]

You look so cute~. Like you have a fever and everything. Do you need me to slow down a little before your head explodes?

[He'd prefer the blood to go in the opposite direction, really, so slowing down isn't exactly in his interests. But if Vash like... gets so flustered he passes out... Doesn't that happen to humans when all the blood goes to their head? They pass out somehow?

Ain, a healer: "Yeah that makes sense."

Anyway, as he's asking this, his hands are roaming the expanse of Vash's abdomen. Slowly.]

[Ain. Ain. What happened to that'sforlater-

The trilling is cute. Vash is well used to Ain's vocalizations by now, because...he's loud like this a lot of the time. The only time it can be worrying is when they're trying to keep a low profile and the guy can't seem to shut up, but fortunately he's not the only bird pet in this area. So long as he isn't too loud about it, they should manage to fly under the radar for the time being...not that Vash is even thinking about that currently as Ain continues to barrel forwards, suddenly reaching up underneath Vash's black undershirt.

There's a moment, then, where clarity returns to him and he hesitates. He doesn't pull back, exactly, and he's too late to stop Ain before he's already put hands to skin, but instead sitss there with worry etched into his features. The moment he touches him, he'll reach the veritable minefield of scars all over Vash's body, with the ones on his torso just the tip of the iceberg. (This is '98 Vash but its basically the same I could not find a visual of '23 that wasn't dark as hell ANYWAY).

The scars are old, most of them. They don't hurt, not unless it gets cold. Otherwise, he's bracing himself for Ain's comments on him being cute to fizzle, though he can't say he'd blame him for it if he did. Yet, despite all of these thoughts rolling around in Vash's head, he manages to laugh softly, this time to cover himself a bit.]

Hah....maybe...just a little.

[Okay, slowing down acknowledged. The singing does not stop, though, like Vash thinks it might. Instead, Ain parses the squirmy trying-to-cover-up as Vash is cold now? And so he brings his wings in to wrap around them both. And the couch, because there's no way they can't kind of drape over the back of it.

Then, he very happily just lays against the guy's chest for a spell, trailing his fingers over the scars within his reach.]

Pretty...

[Ain has no concept of "these can be manifestations of physical trauma they're not pretty", he just has a certain sentimental attitude about them. They're a mark of surviving, and they tell stories, and he also likes that Vash is cool enough to have survived all this.

He snuggles in closer.]

Ahhh, I'm sorry. You're so attractive, I sort of lost myself. I like how vocal you are. [Said the bird.] I'll behave, I promise.

N-no no! It's okay...you didn't do anything wrong.

[All of a sudden, Vash is wrapped up in Ain's wings, and he honestly can't think of anywhere else he'd rather be. Ain has this strange way of diffusing a situation without even meaning to, taking the tension out of the room like someone going at a balloon with a sewing needle. He sags a bit against the couch cushions as Ain rests forward on his chest, taking advantage of the breather to just trace his fingers through the backs of Ain's wings again.]

I'm nothing special, really.

[He remarks, though it's more matter-of-fact than it is at all self-depreciating. Like he's commenting on the weather.]

You're the pretty one. You're so...perfect.

[It's amazing that Ain can diffuse situations at all, since he's got the emotional intelligence of a ham sandwich. Like, he still thinks Vash is cold, not that he might have gone in too strongly and made him feel the least bit insecure where he didn't need to.

Cuddling shirtless with your bird who you just made out with is totally platonic tho—

The hands in his wings are nice. If he weren't currently riled, he might fall asleep like this. It would be warm and safe and no one would be moving for the next eight hours because Ain is Heavy. Unfortunately he's gonna need a cold shower first, but sleep will be easy after that. Probably.

Either way, he doesn't move.]

Am I pretty? You should say it more. [sir.] I still like how you look, even if you don't think anything of yourself. You won't change my opinions on this! Why do you think I wanted to kiss you in the first place?

You're very pretty.

[Vash murmurs that against Ain's ear as they sit there wrapped up in each other on the couch. Or, rather, wrapped up in Ain given the state of his wings currently. Vash may or may not realize that complimenting him further is just going to make Ain's riled-up state even worse, but............oh no......................oops......

What he will do is lean his head forward a bit, just until his forehead rests against Ain's temple. This is more like what they used to do, which makes it surprising how Ain didn't jump Vash's bones before now.]

I'm glad you think so. I don't really think about myself that way a whole lot...so I'm always a little surprised to hear it, I guess. Especially coming from someone like you.

[Who is so pretty it's UNFAIR]

[That cold shower is looking great right about now. Maybe he'll chill out, literally, and he can try to reign in his need to put things in his mouth that probably shouldn't be there.

He's so! Fucking weak for men, what the fuck.]

Someone like me? Oh, does no one compliment you? I'll compliment you. [bet] I want to be the only one who gets to see you like this, though. I don't want to share...

[>implying Vash will ever get laid]

...I like you better than anyone else ever could. [And then, abruptly, because Ain is a master at killing moments:] Are you still cold?

[yeah he's convinced.]

[Good luck even getting to the shower right now when Vash keeps holding you in his Big Strong Arms. He was about to say something sheepish that would have sounded really sad, like no, nobody compliments him because he doesn’t really have any other friends, and those he does have he hasn’t seen in years because he’s constantly on the run- until Ain brings up something else entirely.]

…cold? I’m not cold.

[ :3? ]

Ah? But you were trying to cover up earlier? Are you sure?

[:D?]

Hah?

[…]

Oh…Is? No, no, that wasn’t! Ahhh….

[Vash looks extra sheepish now, and would be rubbing the back of his neck if he had a hand free.]

I was just…I didn’t think you’d want to see all my scars. That’s all.

Why wouldn't I want to see them?

[Girl help he is Totally Lost.]

I like scars. I usually like when you look all rugged, even if you're actually a complete fool underneath. It's attractive.

[Something about Vash being cool and badass on their adventures and then running out of bullets the minute after... hm. Ain might be moronsexual which is extremely funny because usually he's the moron.]

I don't like seeing you hurt, so I'll heal any other injuries you get... but I don't mind scars. I wanted to kiss them, actually.

[Well! Ain is nothing if not brutally honest, which is something Vash appreciates. He looks at him for a long moment, puzzled, the fingers of his good hand pulling through the tertiaries of one of his large wings.]

Kiss them…really?

[Boy that hand is getting really close to "danger hours" again, Ain only has so much patience.

Nevertheless. He nods, and even if Vash can't really see him from this angle, he'll be able to feel the tickle of curls brushing over his skin.]

That was the plan, [he says,] I was going to kiss you all over initially! But you need a break, you said.

[So he's not doing this, because consent is sexy. You know what else is sexy? Snuggling and letting the time pass by while enjoying each other. It's not gay if it's between a pet and his owner— (it's a little gay.)]

...oh! [Suddenly bringing his head up—] Do you want me to heal those marks I left?

[Vash thinks he gets why Ain is asking. It's because of his reaction regarding the other scars...Ain probably assumes he would want to remove them, if at all possible. And, well...the thing is? Vash wouldn't say he's ashamed of his scars, exactly. He doesn't carry them as a badge of pride so much as a mark of survival, as Ain so eloquently put it. Mostly, he wasn't sure how it would be received. He's never...been in a position like this with another person before, much less a pet, much LESS feeling this desperate to please.

And hearing that Ain wants...wanted to kiss him all over makes his heart flutter, helplessly. He swallows audibly before clearing his throat, pulling a few molting bits of downy feathers away from Ain's wing.]

...no, it's okay. Those can stay.

[He doesn't care if people ask about those.]

And...you can kiss me, if you'd like. I don't mind.

[Break time is over.]

[Oh good, he's spared the cold ~~birdbath~~ shower of shame, at least for now. Ain does not undo the wing cocoon very much at all as he moves about, shuffling a little further down Vash's legs because it's gonna be real hard to kiss his chest if he's sitting on his dick like this. He's a bird, not a giraffe.]

Haha, okay. Tell me if you need me to stop again. I don't want to upset you.

[Like, genuinely, he does not. For all the things Ain is and does, the last thing he wants is to actually offend someone he cares about. Does he have the self-awareness to know when he's going to? No, not really; but this kind of thing is easy. Don't kiss someone who doesn't want to be kissed. Consent is sexy.

Vash has been giving him attention for months now, so Ain's giving it back in full, starting up with more cheek-kisses because for some reason he always starts there. Cheeks, and then trailing to his lips, this time not to make out but just to savour; then to his jaw and neck, where he's sure to leave more bruises on the opposite side. Balanced, as all things should be.

And then down, lower, to his collarbone, to kiss a scar on his chest, which he doesn't gun for with his teeth. It's a loving trace of lips over bare skin. Love itself, but Ain doesn't. know what that means, so this is as close as he gets.]

[It's okay if Ain doesn't know what love means, because most days, Vash isn't sure he fully understands it himself. He knows he loved Rem, even though she's gone now. And he loved Nai...but the Nai he knew- or thought he knew- is gone, now. His only other companion in the world, his previous pet...he's gone too. It's just Ain now, and he's pretty sure that the two of them have managed to forge something of a codependent relationship due to that fact. It's not that this happens often with Vash, exactly...he's more used to not getting close to people, for their sake more than his own. This hasn't happened since his last companion, and back then he wasn't sure if he'd be able to take that kind of heartache again.

Yet here he is, sitting on the couch watching Ain with bated breath as he shifts down across his lap so that he has a better vantage point for kissing. From his cheeks, to his lips, then down, down, further down...

In spite of himself, Vash sucks in a breath through his teeth when he feels lips make contact with one of those scars, a nasty gouge that was once messily sewn up by his own hands. It wasn't cleanly done, nor did it heal over properly, and as a result the scar is deep and there to stay. It's also toeing a bizarre line of sensitivity coupled with complete numbness where he fucked up the stitching...he exhales slowly, smoothing his hand down Ain's wing.]

Ain...

[Maybe love is the friends we met along the way—

But Ain is thinking about how his name sounds on Vash's lips and sighing longingly, wantingly, and it's just not fairrrr. The way he says it now is going to be burned into the whore part of Ain's brain forever. He's never going to be normal again. Not that he was normal before, but he's not going to be normal about Vash. Is that a problem? Some might say it is, but it's true, they're codependent on each other. Ain doesn't know how to let go and Vash doesn't seem to want to.

So.

Here they are, there's a hand in his wing and Ain's kissing across the expanse of Vash's chest, wondering how low he can go before he has to slide off of Vash's lap, at which point... well. Earlier thoughts, about being on his knees, but he's focusing on what's important now. There's a pulse fluttering under the skin he can barely feel as his lips trail ever lower, not quite down to Vash's abdomen yet but definitely getting closer. The wing-cocoon does have to shift a bit, and Ain with it, as he sort of slides backwards aaaand there he goes on the floor.

Mmmmmphgh.

Ain flops his head over onto Vash's thigh. There's a scar on his hip that he wants to put his lips over, but he's also trying... so hard... not to kill the guy dead.]

You're new to this, [he muses, finally,] so I really don't want to frighten you, but... how low am I allowed to go?

[When Ain suddenly thuds to the floor, Vash actually sits forward a fraction, grabbing at his wing as he goes down. He doesn't end up yanking on it, exactly, but if it got pulled a little well that's just going to be something Ain has to figure out how to handle. Either way, he's reaching out for him, looking a little concerned because, like, babe are you okay-]

Hey-

[But after a moment he realizes that he didn't actually fall and that being down there was, in fact, intentional. Vash purses his lips a little, sitting back again with mechanical fingers twitching, antsy almost as his hand settles loose over his lap. Ain's head is resting on his leg, now...dangerously close to his abdomen. Even more scars abound here, as well as a very light blonde trail of hair going from his navel down past his slacks.

How low is he...? ...Oh.]

I...Is it okay to say that I'm not sure...?

[That's the best he can say right now, he thinks. He doesn't know how to answer that, because he doesn't want Ain to stop...but he also doesn't know what's going to happen from here, exactly. He's an alien, and while he was very thoroughly given all the clinical sex ed teachings he ever could have needed, that pales in comparison to putting them into actual practice.]

I guess, um...as low as you want. I'll tell you if I need to stop.

It's fine. I'm only asking for your comfort. I already know what I want.

[Maybe he just feels nervous because it's Vash and he wants to do a good job and do right by him and not completely ruin this whole thing for him forever. Is he trying too hard...? Is this more of that anxiety juice he's been sipping his whole life...

Anyway, good lord Ain a boy wants to take care of you once and then touches your wing and you immediately try to suck on him about it. Get help—

Still, he's been given permission to keep doing what he's doing, so he leans forward from his new position on the floor and the kissing begins again, still as gentle and loving as before. Ain is sure not to leave a single spot unkissed, scar or not; at times he even drags his lips over the raised marks instead of just peppers kisses on them, tracing them, memorizing with his lips alone. He moves his hands to hold onto Vash's hips lightly the whole time.

And speaking of those hips, when he's done with... everywhere else, really, that's where he goes next — to kiss along his hipbones and down near the hem of his pants where his chin brushes the rough fabric. Back up, to another scar, but then he stops. Doesn't move his head back, just sort of pauses while he lets his breath tickle over Vash.]

You're really... so, so pretty... I can't get enough of you. I could do this all day.

[And, well, back to kissing. There's another hip he did not kiss yet.]

[This is undoubtedly a lot for Vash, make no mistake. But it’s a lot in a good way. He’s come to care about his little bird quite a lot after all, and receiving affection from him in any capacity makes his heart soar. But this…this isn’t just idle affection. Ain isn’t just cuddling with him on the couch, or preening him…he’s kissing every square inch of his skin that he can reach, and it’s…so good.

By the time Ain has drawn back to speak, Vash is panting, unable to properly calm down or catch his breath really. His skin feels like it’s on fire, and every so often when lips brush something even slightly sensitive to the touch, Vash whimpers under his breath.

Between all of this- being touched and loved on by a beautiful man, the anticipation of the unknown, the anxiety of equally wanting to perform well- Vash begins feeling…antsy. He’s having a harder time sitting still, his shoes shuffling on the floor as he reaches his hand around to touch the small of Ain’s back, and this time…he doesn’t quite manage to avoid touching the base of his wings. His long fingers linger there, tracing the baby feathers just beyond the edge.

And meanwhile…Vash’s clothing- what’s left of it- is starting to grow uncomfortable. Even he’s not so virgin that he can’t tell he’s getting hard from this, oops.]

Oh—

[It's a sharp exhale against Vash's skin, when that hand winds up where it does. It's nice. Incredibly so, given the little noise he makes in response to it. Vash hasn't done anything other than kind of set his hand there, and Ain is already squirming. Maybe his emotions are running too high right now, maybe it's because it's Vash, either way — there really is no turning back now. He can see everything from this angle, and Vash's hand is already where Ain warned it probably shouldn't be.

They're already, like, Not Friends anymore. Friends with benefits? Is that what they are? Ain doesn't have the time nor willpower to ponder this, because he has work to be doing — he's kissed everywhere, yeah, but he sure hasn't licked everywhere. There's a big difference, and that's what he moves to next, drawing his tongue over one scar in particular that he remembers specifically made Vash squirm the last time.

This time, he's moving upwards as he goes, still on the floor but leaning more forward into it.]

Keep your hand there, [he instructs,] I like that.

[The one on his back, he means, if that was somehow not glaringly obvious.

For once, he's quiet. No trilling or general noisiness, for now, because something feral in him has finally broke and he's too busy wrapping his lips around a nipple and sucking to really bother with being cute right now.]

[Oh? He's done something good? ...ah, now he sees. He's absently gone touching Ain's wings all willy-nilly again, but it seems in this case that's a good thing. He's not really gotten too deliberate or crazy with it, meaning that...well. Realistically, he's probably teased poor Ain half to death by this point. He'll keep his hand right where it is though, his fingertips pressing lightly in against the white fluff as he nods a little helplessly, too focused on what Ain is doing right now to actually say anything else just yet.

And with good reason, because before he can really think about much else, Ain has managed to crawl his way back up his chest, back across all of those scars and imperfections. Vash licks his lips to wet them, opens his mouth as if to say something-]

A-ah!

[And promptly moans instead as Ain expertly takes one of his nipples into his mouth, which also prompts that hand on his wing to shift to gripping a little. Not hard, just...you know. Holding on, for Purchase. He was not expecting the hit of pleasure to his senses that was, maybe because he's never been touched like this before.]

[Haha. Boys. :)

Ain is thoroughly enjoying himself. Vash's hand on his wing makes it better, but Ain could very much still enjoy this without being touched at all. Maybe he'll explain service tops and such to Vash some other time, as best he can anyway.

So hey remember five minutes ago when he had a single confetti-sized scrap of self-control? That's all gone now. Ain is usually a lot more patient in bed — like, if he's on top, anyway, don't ask what he's like if he's bottoming he's actually The Worst — but this is not one of those times. It's months of being pent-up and just thinking Vash is The Coolest mingling with how much he cares for the man mingling further with whatever reward feedback loop goes on in his head. And it's a lot. And therefore, Ain is parting Vash's thighs with his hands and then palming him through his pants, all while his mouth works over him.

He's not going to leave the other nipple neglected for very long, though.
